Meet Your Meat

Print

Several years ago the young ladies of the Mizzou Collegiate Cattlewomen founded an educational event for the students and faculty of the MU campus called Meet your Meat. This event was started as part of our effort to inform those from outside the agriculture industry about the benefits of beef. We, like many others from within the agricultural industry, understand the importance of promoting agriculture; more specifically beef, to those around us.

We inform consumers on campus by bringing a heifer (a cow that has yet to calve) onto the middle of the campus. The live calf is the main attraction that draws individuals into the event area so that we can take the opportunity to educate. We answer any questions that people may have about the animal and how she has been raised. In addition, we have educational boards with hot topics in the beef industry such as finely textured lean beef, the use of antibiotics and hormones, grain vs. grass fed beef, etc. When consumers are finished asking questions and learning about the beef industry, we have ribeye steak sandwiches, chips, and drink for sale for $5. Selling the steak sandwiches help to remind people how great beef tastes and gives us more time to speak with those in attendance.

Our goal with this event is to reach the thousands of consumers on campus and give them the facts about beef and the beef industry. This year, the fourth annual “Meet your Meat” will be held on Lowry Mall at the University of Missouri on Wednesday May 1, 2013, approximately from 9am-4pm.
